How Long Does a Maternity Photoshoot Last?

Sep 29

We often get a question about newborn photography sessions and why it takes so much longer than other shoots. How can a tiny, sleepy baby take 2 to 3 hours to be photographed? Couples who haven't had their baby yet often ask this question.

They have yet to realize that even the most simple task (leaving your house) is difficult. Making a cup of coffee is easy. When your world was once ordered, it suddenly becomes a mountain!

Why does newborn photography last so long?

Here's a description of what we do during newborn photography sessions. It's a long-haul shoot that can be exhausting, but it is ultimately worth it.

Babies can't be rushed. So relax and let me do my job.

I vividly remember the rush of the first few weeks after your baby was born. My eldest is now in his teenage years. When you make it to my studio, an accomplishment I am proud of, the last thing you want is to rush around or feel guilty if you are late or your baby isn't performing or behaving correctly during the session.

I book only one newborn session per day. If you are running behind, don't worry. It's normal for new parents. Once you're there, the hard part is over. You can now enjoy a cup of coffee and a biscuit. I always keep the best biscuits for my dads and mom. As you watch, I gently rock your child into a deep sleep.

Babies can be unpredictable.

Photographing babies is not a one-size fits all approach. The same goes for other people. It takes patience, preparation, and experience to capture the best images for parents. It all starts before the shoot day with a phone call or email consultation, or a visit to the studio, if desired. I want to know as much information as possible about your newborn photography session.

I'm interested in learning more:

  • What you'd like to capture
  • What you see will be the images that result
  • What colors suit your interior decor?
  • Please let us know if you have any ideas for what you would like to do after the images are taken.

After your baby arrives and we have settled in, he might prefer to sleep on his stomach. Or, he might be more comfortable on his back and prefers lying on his side. This will allow for a lot of flexibility. While I plan many sleepy poses, the little ones I know who are awake and alert will take the best photos with their big eyes and curious expressions.

We stop and begin whenever the baby needs feeding or changing. There's no way to hurry! My sessions produce images that are serene, peaceful, and beautiful. But, as with all things, the hard work happens behind the scenes.

Safety for your baby during your newborn photography session

The safety of the little person you brought to my studio is paramount. Melanie East is a top UK newborn photographer. I have worked with her extensively, and she has been a significant influence on my work. There are never any reasons to risk a baby. I won't allow my baby to be in any position that could cause future injuries or joint problems.

A spotter is someone who holds the baby's hand to support it. My studio is kept at the right temperature to ensure that your baby doesn't get too hot or cold during the session. You can rest assured that my top priority is your welfare.
